Active Software Update Point (SUP) –
Definition:
An Active Software Update Point is the primary server role within a site in Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr/SCCM) that interacts directly with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Its key functions include:
- Synchronizing update metadata between WSUS and Configuration Manager.
- Managing software update settings like classifications and products.
- Enabling client communication for scan and update compliance.
Key Characteristics:-
- WSUS Integration: Acts as the bridge between ConfigMgr and WSUS.
- Single Active SUP per site: While you can have multiple SUPs for high availability, only one is active per site at a time for synchronization.
- Client Communication:
- Can accept intranet and internet client connections.
- Internet-facing clients connect through a Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) or Internet-based client management (IBCM).
Why It Matters:
- Ensures update compliance across managed systems.
- Provides a centralized way to manage Microsoft software updates.
- Controls the flow of metadata and content for updates in enterprise environments.
