Active Software Update Point (SUP) –

Active Software Update Point (SUP)

Definition:

An Active Software Update Point is the primary server role within a site in Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr/SCCM) that interacts directly with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Its key functions include:

  • Synchronizing update metadata between WSUS and Configuration Manager.
  • Managing software update settings like classifications and products.
  • Enabling client communication for scan and update compliance.

Key Characteristics:-

  • WSUS Integration: Acts as the bridge between ConfigMgr and WSUS.
  • Single Active SUP per site: While you can have multiple SUPs for high availability, only one is active per site at a time for synchronization.
  • Client Communication:
    • Can accept intranet and internet client connections.
    • Internet-facing clients connect through a Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) or Internet-based client management (IBCM).

Why It Matters:

  • Ensures update compliance across managed systems.
  • Provides a centralized way to manage Microsoft software updates.
  • Controls the flow of metadata and content for updates in enterprise environments.
