Active Directory-based Activation (ADBA) –
Active Directory-based activation (ADBA) is a method used by enterprises to automatically activate Microsoft products like Windows and Office across domain-joined systems. Here’s a clear explanation of what it means:
ADBA is a volume activation method where systems activate automatically when they join an Active Directory (AD) domain. It uses Key Management Service (KMS) keys (also called Generic Volume License Keys – GVLKs) and a Volume Activation Services role installed on a domain controller.
How It Works-
- Domain Setup: The organization has an existing Active Directory domain.
- Volume License Key: An IT admin installs a Volume Activation Services role and configures a KMS host key (e.g., Windows Server or Office volume license key) on a domain controller.
- Activation Objects in AD: When configured, the system creates activation objects in Active Directory.
- Client Activation: Any domain-joined client with a matching GVLK automatically activates when it authenticates with AD — no need to contact Microsoft servers.
Key Features-
- Works offline (no need for internet access or contacting Microsoft).
- Simplifies activation across many systems in an enterprise.
- Supports Windows 8/Server 2012 and newer.
- Uses GVLKs and AD credentials for secure and seamless activation.
